New York Solo Show

I'll have 23 new paintings in a solo-show at Arcadia Contemporary. The show runs from December 12th-31st 2013.

Prix de West Exhibition June 2013

This is my second year exhibiting at the Prix de West, I decided to go a little bigger than last year with my painting Vermillion Cliffs at 50" x 70". One of my largest paintings to date. My friend and painter Logan Hagege modeled for me. I wanted to capture that light late in the day just before the winter sun sets behind the mesa.

Fine Art Connoisseur magazine talks about my Sweden Workshop

I'm honored to have an article written by Vanessa Françoise Rothe in the April 2013 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine about my recent trip and workshop in Sweden. Whats even cooler is that it follows the article on an artist who has influenced my work more than almost any other artist, Swedish painter Anders Zorn.

Like Zorn, Lipking is considered a naturalist painter and has taken many of his painting cues from an intense study of this great man's oeuvre.

Easel Notes...

Hot off the easel, two new paintings are featured this weekend at the Maynard Dixon Country Show in Mt. Carmel, Utah.

The two paintings in the show, pictured below, are "Puesta Del Sol De Los Muertos", 22"x 30" and "Sierra Cirque", 30"x30".

The prestigious event attracting top-notch artists from all over the country is hosted by The Thunderbird Foundation For The Arts and runs from August 24 to 28th, with a gala reception on the evening of the 27th. Some landscape painting in between!

OTHER STUDIO NEWS, a new semester of teaching begins Tuesday September 6th from 7 to 10pm. Students will paint from the model. All aspects of the Lipking approach will be covered. See bottom image, demo, "Nude in Repose, 12" x 24".

Sierra Landscape Painting Workshop

Here are some pictures from my landscape painting workshop in the Sierra's. We made the town of June Lake our base camp and each day went out to paint a different location between Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes. We all had a great time, great weather and some amazing subjects to paint.

I had Bartche Miller from the Mono Lake Committee come give an amazing talk on the geology and natural history of the Sierra Nevada.

Painting on the shore of Lake George. Because of the record snowfall this year there was still a huge amount of snow on the ground above 9000 ft. Some of the lakes I was planning on taking the group were still frozen over and under 8 feet of snow and probably wont be open till the end of July.

Mono county is one of the least populated counties in California, there are no cities nearby to cause light pollution, this makes for an amazing night sky.

After a day of painting we went down to South Tufa at Mono Lake to watch the sunset. Cody was the only one with the energy to pull off another painting.

After the last day of the workshop we relaxed with some wine at hilltop hotsprings.

This is a fun technique I haven't done in a while. I used Terra Rosa and black with a couple stiff brushes a kneaded eraser and oil primed linen.

I just spent the morning exploring some of the museums that I've never visited in person. Check it out its loads of fun. The images are very good quality and hi resolution.

My Star Wars Art: Visions painting

The Star Wars Art: Visions book just came out and is available from amazon. I was pretty surprised when I saw they used the sketch for my painting "Yobana" on the title page. The book was written by Lucasbooks executive editor Jonathan Rinzler and George Lucas and includes paintings by artists who don't normally paint SciFi subjects. Artist like Jamie Wyeth, Michael Grimaldi, Will Wilson, Daniel Greene are some of the guys who did work for the project.

The subject for my painting "Yobana" is a young female Twi'lek slave.

Alexey Steele and I attended this panel discussion at MOCA last month while we were preparing for our own panel on a similar topic as it relates to the realist movement coming up in D.C next week. Here's some of what Alexey wrote on the Novorealism blog.

AS WE KNOW IT

Anybody who ever wondered just how bad things really are in the formerly mercurial Arts Valhalla of fate of the art and artists weighing in their divinely guided hands demigods - just had to attend that panel.

Curious and excited about the forward looking premises of the panel, a really top-notch level of participants and primarily the uniqueness of the fact that the panel was sponsored and initiated by the venerable Annenberg School of Communication & Journalism of USC, no less, Jeremy and I just decided, yeah…we gotta see that and just jumped into our cars to dive into the pain of LA’s rush hour. What wouldn’t you do for a freebie. What we came to experience was nothing short of shock…well nothing less could be expected from MOCA after all…yet likely not in a way participants intended.

Instead of a welcoming party for the new, it turned out to be a funeral for the old.

On the other hand, don’t get me wrong(unless you really want to and that’s fine too) it is precisely the sky-high level of participants that made the totality of this experience possible….like the never scoring soccer match of equals, don’t expect goal after goal – that’s mostly for light-weights, but enjoy the swift and unnoticeable subtlety of moves.

To say that the mood was far from joyous excitement of welcoming that strange “new”, is to say nothing. In fact it was so heavy, you could cut it into bricks and it had the feel of a press conference of a short-lived August Putsch at the end of a Gorbachev era that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union or as we say in Russia “the flies were dying”…yet below this apparent dullness of dead water, I felt a tectonic shift of plates in the ocean floor of ART. Nothing less. Exciting – you bet, at some point, I wanted to jump up from my seat screaming “yeah!” Almost did. Cannot really believe some were leaving half way through.

Andrew Berardini - a cool very young dude, wearing black, of course in super-cool glasses

Sharon Mizota – a sharp as a tack, calm and concise heroine of Tarantino movies

Bennett Simpson – now…that was a surprise…but that later…solid, polished, refined corner stone of the establishment…he really did carry the panel in so many ways.

And, the best for last, moderated or rather “inquired” by an enormously intelligent

Sasha Anawalt of Annenberg – booooooy what a lady…. gotta love democracy and its so very few remaining despite all journalists.
