Painting in Maine

This is a little bit of video I shot of some of the guys painting Marshall Point at sunset.

I just returned from a really fun painting trip to Maine. I rented a house with twelve other painters on Marshall Point in Port Clyde Maine. Paul Schulenburg, Frank Gardner, Ernesto Nemesio, Casey Baugh, Logan Hagege, Glenn Dean, Eric Merrell, Colin Page, Lance Walker, Jeff Bonasia, Jerome Greene and Peter Kalill. But before going to Maine, Ernesto and I stayed in NH and VT for a couple days and had an opportunity to visit paint with living master Richard Schmid, Richards daughter Gretchen Schmid was our model.

Ernesto and me with Richard and our paintings of Gretchen. Ernesto painted her too but his painting didn't make it in this shot.

Marshall Point Nocturne 6"x8" oil

I did a small night painting with some of the other guys. Painting at night is always challenging but it's especially difficult when there is no moon out to give you a little extra light and color. You need to use a headlamp to see your palette and your painting, but the light of the lamp is so bright relative to the landscape that when you look up from your painting you cant see a thing until your eyes re-adjust. Eric Merrell and Frank Gardner posted some of their nocturnes on their blogs, and by the way please visit Franks blog and post a comment, I feel sorry for him that he doesnt get any traffic.

Colorado Academy of Art Closes and Owes People Money

This is an update from last weeks entry October Workshop Canceled
Apparently Peter Kennedy has owed a lot of people a lot of money for a long time. I've been getting a lot of of email lately about Peter Kennedy and the CAA, Some are from former teachers and many from students who were signed up for my October workshop at the Academy. I haven't heard from anyone who has actually received a refund for the class or even gotten a reply from Peter Kennedy, if anyone did get refunded I'd like to know. It doesn't seem likely though, according to an article in the Daily Camera the teachers at the school haven't been paid for six months, he wasn't good in business and administration but he was sure good at convincing people to work for free.

Update: The school is filing Chap. 7 Bankruptcy, if you dont want him absolved of his dept you need to file a complaint with the court by 2/23/09. There is a "meeting of creditors" on 12/23/08 but it is not necessary to attend.

October Colorado Workshop Canceled

The Colorado Academy of Art in Boulder has closed, and my workshop has been canceled.
This is text from an email sent out today from Peter Kennedy of CAA, it gives an email address to contact someone about a refund. It doesn't sound very assuring, if you were signed up for the workshop you should probably contact them right away. The doors are closed, the website is down, the phone is disconnected and the email address below is the only way to get in contact with anyone from the school.

"There are some outstanding refunds that still need to be addressed for future classes or workshops that some have registered for. Please respond to caaclosed@gmail.com if a refund is owed to you so we can begin to formulate a plan to try to pay those back."

Update: Just found this article online on the Daily Camera about the CAA closing. Apparently the instructors stopped getting payed 6 months ago.

American Art Collector Magazine article and cover

I have an article in the June issue of American Art Collector Magazine Jeremy Lipking Force of Nature. Photographer Jeff Newton came out and took some cool photos of me working. There are some paintings from my upcoming show in Santa Monica including the cover image, a detail of a painting of my daughter Skylar.
My buddy Joseph Todorovitch also has an article in the same issue.
